Cover Up Tattoos
Lightening a Tattoo Prior to Cover up with a
Many of my referrals come from Tattoo artists who refer people with
existing tattoos that they wish to cover with a new tattoo. Some tattoos are so dark or dense
that any cover up would have to be even darker and denser thus limiting
the clients choices and reducing the ability of the artist to be as
creative as possible. Over the years, tattoo artists have come to trust
me to lighten their clients' tattoos thereby giving them a cleaner
canvas upon which to work with greater flexibility of color and design.
The end result is cleaner better art and a more satisfied client.
The procedure for lightening a tattoo prior to re-tattooing is the same
as for removing an unwanted tattoo. We simply stop treating the tattoo
when sufficient lightening is achieved. Obviously this requires fewer
treatments and less time than tattoo removal. There is communication
between the client (patient), the artist and myself with regard to how
light the tattoo needs to be. There is also communication with regard to
which parts or colors of the tattoo are most important to be lightened
and which parts and colors cannot be lightened easily.
Removing a Tattoo that is a Cover Up Over an Older Tattoo
In my Manhattan laser tattoo removal practice I commonly treat patients seeking laser tattoo removal
for a tattoo that is a cover up over an older tattoo. There is often
much more ink, ink at different levels, mixtures of ink colors and ink
types. Therefore a greater number of treatments are always needed. Some
cover up tattoos respond beautifully and simply require more treatments
over time. Others don't not fade as completely. A consultation to remove
a dense cover up tattoo is more complex than a typical laser tattoo
removal consultation. These cases are challenging. However, some of my
most satisfying cases have been cover up removals where the patient was
realistic and allowed me to treat them properly over time.
